But when you take into account the shifts in gameplay from top-down adventure, to 3D platformer, to side-scroller, to third-person fighter, this seems like a game that could have it all. The Plucky Squire, the debut from Turner’s studio All Possible Futures, starts off as an adorable, if slightly cliched, adventure. That in itself is a great premise, especially when each dimension is realised in such a beautiful style. Jot clearly inhabits two worlds, two dimensions if you will, and must shift between them on his quest for… Whatever his goal is. The comparisons to A Link To The Past again rear their heads. ![]() ![]() Jot battles on bookcases, but also makes his way across the sides of novelty mugs – again converted to his two dimensional self. The colourful action adventure's core concept. But aside from moving between 2D and 3D platforming, The Plucky Squire’s innovation doesn’t stop there. The debut trailer for The Plucky Squire left us extremely excited to play this new game from Devolver Digital, and the follow-up is just as charming. I had thought that designing the 3D bedroom was a bit excessive for a trailer for a 2D adventure game, but I definitely didn’t make any assumptions. It has made developing this so much more fun. I love using Unreal - you can tell its a game making tool made by people who actually use it to make games. Started learning both Unreal and C++ three years ago, and started The Plucky Squire in 2020. The twist is great I certainly didn’t expect it and I imagine few did. Been developing games for 22 years (not always as a coder), but this is my first Unreal project. Then, Jot discovers the portal to the outside world. Just like the key ability in Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The bear boss fight switches from a top-down perspective to third-person, and the battle seems to be inspired by fighting games as you dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge your much larger opponent’s swipes and land some punches yourself. He can then run around the desk the book rests on, as well as the surrounding bedroom and even flatten himself against various surfaces to traverse. A new gameplay trailer for the gorgeous action-adventure game The Plucky Squire shows just how seamlessly we'll be jumping between 2D and 3D as Jot and his friends escape the confines of their book. It starts off looking like a simple top-down adventure game, like a retro Legend Of Zelda title mixed with some side-scrolling, but then main character Jot leaves the confines of the storybook and starts walking around in the real world like a 3D platformer. The aesthetic also has similar vibes to the homemade visuals of RPG Time, with the game set in a storybook and the action taking place across its pages. The Plucky Squire released date is unknown. We won’t hold that against him, though, since The Plucky Squire’s new trailer makes for a great first impression, boasting gameplay that looks like a mix between A Link Between Worlds and the 2D sections of Super Mario Odyssey. Pokémon fans best know him as the art director for Pokémon Sword & Shield and for designing a handful of pokémon across the series, including those awful ice cream ones from Pokémon Black & White. Turner’s credits include director on lesser-known Game Freak projects like HarmoKnight and Tembo The Badass Elephant. ![]()
